Reject Images (Front Cover)

I rejected this image for my front cover because the star is smiling, the aim for our front cover is promote style and I need the star to look serious as the story in the trailer is not a laughing matter. Finally the star's eyes are squinting and therfore does not draw the readers attention

I rejected this image because the framing is wrong and we are unable to see the star. We need a full shot of his head if the front cover is to work, also the posture of the star is wrong and looks unnatural

I rejected this image because the jacket over the shoulder makes the shot look happy and upbeat when the aim of our shot is to promote style and a sense of the upcoming show which is not an upbeat situation for the star

I rejected this image because the star's hand is covering to much of his hair and the position looks unnatural, As well as this the shot is taken from to far away so would not be suitable for the close up shot I require for my front cover

TV Magazine Analysis

Front Cover Flat Plan

My flat plan is based on this edition of Fabulous Magazine:

I decided this was the right magazine cover to base my front cover on because the image stands out and looks bold, its the center of the page and draws the reader in, after planning my images I found that my image would work well in a similar lay out to this.

Rejected Clips

Front Cover Planning

We created these mind maps to decide on colour scheme, names, layout and the type of magazine it was going to be. These mind maps were useful when coming to decisions

Music Planning

I needed to choose a song that was correct for the theme and feel of my trailer. It also needed to be a song that fitted with the conventions of a Scripted Reality. I wanted an upbeat song that would appeal to my target audience, firstly I tryed Olly Murs Troublemaker, this song would fit in well with the storyline of my trailer as the main character causes trouble around Chelsea, but I could not use this song as the lyrics were overlapping with the characters speech which lead to my trailer's speech being less clear. My second choice was the song that I chose to be my trailers background music. The song Midnight City by M83 first came around when the first episode of Made In Chelsea was released it was the song that introduced the show therefore it fits the of a scripted reality show and as there is a long introduction of the long it worked out that the lyrics would not interrupt with the characters speech

Billboard Planning

I am going to base my Made In Manchester poster on The Only Way Is Essex poster, it is bright and colourfull and stands out from other types of posters, It shows all the characters which are in my soap which is similar to the Made In Chelsea Billboard

Trailer Planning

I decided to use the Made In Chelsea trailer Series 3 episode 4 as the trailer to base my Made In Manchester trailer on. The reasons I chose this trailer was it had a strong storyline which could be developed into a trailer that had 1 main storyline. The speech in this trailer is strong and shows the audience what the story is about. Also the trailer had the correct number of characters in it that would work for my group therefore everyone would have a role to play.

Poster Practice

Before planning my poster I had to do research on Poster's from similar scripted realities. This is a Made In Chelsea poster, I found this poster to extravagant, unlike Made In Chelsea, Made In Manchester is not about having wealth so therefore this poster would not be appropiate for my audience, I need to use a poster that is more bright and colourfull a more appropiate show would be The Only Way Is Essex

Poster Planning

I have created two designs for a possible Poster/Billboard and will try them both out to see what they look like

Made In Manchester First draft

This is my first edit of my Made In Manchester trailer. There is many problems with it. Firstly a lot of the shots I have used the camera movement is shaky, this is not a convention that is used in Scripted Reality, therefore I need to re-shoot these shots with a tri-pod so that the camera movement matches the conventions of scripted reality programmes. Another problem with my first edit is the sound. My background music prevents me from hearing some of the speech therefore I need to edit the sound so that I can still hear the speech as well as the backround music. My first edit has some positives. The storyline of the trailer makes sense and when I have the right clips will run as planned.

Reject Images (billboard)

I rejected this image as the star's face looks scared and the expression looks unnatural and doesn't fit in with the feel of the billboard which is to show anger towards the main star (Tarquin)
I rejected this image because the star's eyes are to squinted and the lack of eye contract wont draw in the watchers attention. It is hard to see whether the star's eyes are actually open and we are unsure which way she is facing
I rejected this image because the star's is looking down to much and its hard to see her face we need her head to be higher and he eyes to look down
I rejected this image as the star's face is not appropriate for the feel of the billboard the billboard is meant to be serious and show the storyline. Also the lack of eye contract draws attention away from the main character

Made In Manchester Take 5

This is my 5th edit of my trailer. I have now removed the previous faults on the 4th edit, the sound is clearer and the clips are shorter making the trailer stand out more and keeps it exciting. I still have problems with this trailer, I have now created a professional looking title card so I no longer need the imovie title cards that now don't look right and make my trailer look sloppy.

Made In Manchester Take 4

This is my fourth edit of my Made In Manchester trailer, I have made a few changes from my third draft. Firstly I have enhanced the volume of the characters speech, originally it was on 100%  I have increased to 140% so It is easier and clearer to hear what they are saying, I have also reduced the volume of the background music to once again enhance the characters speech. I have also removed the background noise on my last three clips I have done this because after watching several Made In Chelsea trailers you will find the sound is not natural as there is no background noise this enhances the speech. Another change I have made is that I have deleted my establishing shot, I realised the framing was wrong and made my trailer look unprofessional and i did not need it in order to make my trailer make sense. Finally I have faded out the background music as we get to the end of the trailer, this is used to show the audience that my trailer is ending.

Made In Manchester trailer 3

After receiving feedback on my previous rough cuts I have made the appropriate changes. Firstly I have removed Scenes 1 and other parts of the first filming this was because the framing was wrong and the camera was shaky which make my trailer look proffesional. I re-filmed these parts using a tri-pod therefore making sure the framing and camera movement is correct. I all made my trailer around 18 seconds shorter I have done this by cutting back on the clips and making them shorter and sharper, this gives my trailer a quicker more upbeat feel to it. I have also added some effects so when you hear some dialogue it changes clips showing the audience the speech and clip is related. I have also reduced the sound of the background music as it was hard to hear the characters speech. Finally I have added a voice over at the end of the trailer telling the audience what the show is and when it is on, I have done this to fit the conventions of soap trailers

Soap Poster Conventions

On a soap opera poster there should be a narrative to draw the reader in as well as this there should information about the plot and characters playing on what the audience already know about the character. The posters will usually be on a billboard on the side of the road so will only be read for a few seconds therefore the text needs to be catchy and play on words that people already associate with the soap. As the audience only see the image for a few seconds the image and the text need to having a lasting impact so the audience will remember it. In a soap opera poster you need to show character stereotypes as well as miss en scene and lighting that are assosiated with the show

Rejected Images

I rejected this images for my front cover as the background doesn't look natural due to the fact there is a black bar at the top of it, I needed my image to look neat and clean which could only be done if I had a white background

Similarly with this image I have not got a good enough background for this to be my front cover image. This image is better than the first one due to it being slightly closer therefore hitting the shot type I wanted

Why Are Soap Operas So Popular

  • Soap Operas are easy to get back in to due to there changing story line and characters meaning that fans don't have to watch every episode as you can catch up on everything in a later show
  • Soap Operas story lines of everyday life and everyday problems means the audience is drawn to watch it as they can relate to it. Whereas the American soaps such as Dallas and Dynasty are often thought of as a form of 'fantasy' by some viewers, British soaps, and indeed Australian soaps, are generally referred to as being, 'realistic' in that they focus on the domestic and personal, and on everyday concerns and problematic issues such as death, friendship, marriage, romance and divorce.
  • Soap Opera writers have found a way to bring in realism as well as provide the audience with comedy. Coronation Street use strong northern accents and have characters that are 'stupid' or 'slow' an example of this would be Les Battersby who was seen as a 'prankster' and therefore was funny to watch
  • As Soap Operas are shown on TV repetitively the audience gain a relationship with these characters and feel like they know them "When I sit down to watch, I belong to the family in a way...I can enter into all the characters because they're so familiar" (Ang 1985) this results in the audience caring for these characters and seeing the show as being real life
  • As Soap Operas have realistic story lines it is clear that viewers use the behavior of the character in order to justify there actions in a similar situation, meaning that through the problems we see on Soaps the audience are able to learn and sometimes take the same approach.
  • The audience gain pleasure from identifying them self as a certain character, they see the character has a similar personality or traits to them so can relate to them. This point applies more to British and Australian soaps more than American soaps due to the realism
  • Soap opera is also popular due to its continuity, regularity and familiarity. Soap opera has been labelled as a 'ritual pleasure' which offers reassurance in its familiarity and longevity, its predictable familiarity of life being the main force which pulls us in
  •  Interestingly, the genre's popularity also stems partly from the viewer's need, after the events of the day, to find out what happened in Coronation Street, Albert Square or Summer Bay that same day. Due to this, the viewer can often gain pleasure from the notion that everyday life in the soaps is 'real' and on-going just as our lives are
  •  The theme tune of a soap draws in the audience and shows new watchers the destination of the soap, The familiar theme tune played on the piano reminds us of London where EastEnders is set, and likewise the nostalgic sound of the cornet playing the Coronation Street theme reminds us of the famous brass bands we associate with the North of England.
  •  Also, due to the soap being solely based in one place geographically, and portraying the lives of the same characters in each episode, we can be assured of familiarity and continuity. Additionally, in certain soaps, the viewer is aware of where a character is, or what he or she is doing if absent from a particular episode.

Analysis of Hollyoaks Promo

  •  I was unable to open with a title card, sponsored by Nikon as I could not find a high enough quality image that would of made my promo look better
  • Paul says 'nothing you do can push me away' this is a two shot where paul dominates the frame Paul takes up over 50% of the screen showing he is dominant in this relationship.
  • My two shot of Paul and mercedes is similar to the original shot, I believe that Paul (Ste) is dominant in the shot showing he has all the power in the relationship
  • They are in a house of the miss en scene shows a picture on the wall and we can tell from the light in the room there is a window
  • Paul whole body is turned towards her and his eyes are locked on to her with her eyes looking down to avoid eye contact
  • Non Verbal Communication is used when Paul is in her face and is threatening
  • Her hair is covering her face helping to prevent eye contact she has a very negative body language

    • Mercedes 'I have never seen a man so obsessed'
    • The shot is from the Kitchen as the miss en scene shows cuboards and tiles, this is an establishing shot
    • Jacqui is in the background of the shot making it a 2 person shot
    • Mercedes is in focus during this shot
    • Light source coming from the right as its yellow we can tell its unnatural, the light is softer showing she is safer in this environment
    • There is non-diagetic sound of a heartbeat with helps the audience feel tense

    • Quick edits of Rhys telling Jacqui 'The girl needs help' to her sneaking around an office shows she is doing something wrong
    • We no she is in an office by the Miss en scene of blinds, desks, files
    • Mercedes's phone has 5 missed phone calls from Jacqui this is a key shot showing the audience its importance
    • The editing suggests she is calling about what she has found in the draws

    • In the shot Paul's face is dominant once again we can see his full face and we see how intensely he is staring at her, he is above her showing his dominance in the relationship, as we cant see much of her face she appears vulnerable
    • When Paul says 'I love you' Mercedes is reluctant to say it back and Paul has to tell her to 'say it back'

    • The last shot of Jacqui is of her in a hospital running towards a door saying 'she is in danger'
    • This is a trailer that concentrates on one story line but in the show there will be other things happening.
